A REASONABLE PETITION.
You say, dearest girl, you esteem me,And hint of respectful regard,
And I'm certain it would n't beseem me,
Such an excellent gift to discard.
But even the Graces, you'll own,
Would lose half their beauty apart;
And Esteem, when she stands all alone,
Looks most unbecomingly tart.
So grant me, dear girl, this petition:—
If Esteem e'er again should come hither,
Just to keep her in cheerful condition,
Let Love come in company with her!
