ROMAN CATHOLIC MYSTICAL writer and CARMELITE reformer best known for his meditation The Dark Night of the Soul which shows profound insight into spiritual and PSYCHOLOGICAL states based on his own experience. His work, which was guided by TERESA of AVILA, encountered strong opposition and he was repeatedly persecuted by CHURCH authorities for his views.
