Ruth Muskrat Bronson (Cherokee)
Ruth Muskrat was born in Indian Territory about 1897. As a young woman, she
was active in the Y. W. C. A. and was a representative of the North American
Indians at the International Student Volunteer Conference in Peking, China,
in 1922. She attended Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania for a time
before entering the University of Oklahoma and later Mount Holyoke College.
Upon graduation from Mount Holyoke, she worked for the Bureau of Indian
Affairs in several positions, including Guidance and Placement Officer. She
was also active in Indian affairs, serving as executive secretary of the
National Congress of American Indians. She wrote and published poetry and
articles on the American Indian as well as a book, Indians Are People, Too,
in 1947.
