HARE KRISHNA MOVEMENT:
the INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR KRISHNA CONSCIOUSNESS (ISKCON),
founded on his arrival in America in 1965 by His Divine Grace SWAMI A. C. Bhaktivedanta
PRABHUPADA, and one of the most visible of the NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS. Devotees sing,
dance, sell records, books, or the magazine Back to Godhead, and wear saffron
colored robes. The young men have their heads shaved, apart from a topknot with which they
believe KRISHNA will pluck them up by when he rescues them at the time of the deliverance
of the world. It is through the frequent chanting of their MANTRA—Hare Krishna, Hare
Krishna—that the devotees have become popularly known as Hare Krishnas. The theological
basis of the movement is the BHAGAVAD-GTA as translated by their Master.
