Poe Collection: Letter from Edgar Allan Poe to John Allan, 1829 March 10
Manuscript, Valentine Museum, Richmond, Virginia
I arrived on the point this morning,
in good health, and if it were not for late
occur-
-rences, should feel much happier than I have for
a long time.[2] I have had a fearful warning,
& have hardly ever known before what distress
was.
The Colonel has left the point this
morning for
Washington to congratulate the President
so I have not yet seen him. He will return
on Thursday week next. In the mean time I
am employing my self in preparing for the [OMITTED]
which will engage my attention at W. Point if
I should be so fortunate as to obtain an appointment.
I am anxious to retrieve my good name with
friends & especially your good opinion.
I think a letter of recommendation from Ju[OMITTED]
Major Gibbon, & Col. Pres[OMITTED]ton forwarded to [OMITTED]
[OMITTED]t a letter to Mr.
Patterson requesting [OMITTED]
[OMITTED] would prev[OMITTED] I may be r[OMITTED]
[OMITTED]tonian.
[OMITTED]
your room to tell you good bye — but, as you
were asleep, I would not disturb you.
I am, dear Pa,
Yours affectionately
