Frederick William Thomas (1806-1866) was a good friend and frequent correspondent of Poe's. A novelist, journalist and poet, Thomas was also involved in politics; at the time of this letter he was working in the Treasury Department. Thomas later attempted to procure a position for Poe in the Philadelphia Custom House, but the appointment fell through (Thomas, xliv-xlv).
