Summary
Manuscript, Poe Museum, Richmond, Virginia ;
In this letter to Thomas Willis White (1788-1843), the publisher of
Southern Literary Messenger, Poe acknowledges
that he received $20 in payment for his work as a contributor and
discusses how critics have been reviewing the Messenger.
In addition, he asks that White publish several
items complimentary to Poe: the news
that Poe's "Manuscript Found in a Bottle" won
a short story contest sponsored by the Baltimore Visiter, as well as a
letter from Kennedy, Latrobe and Miller making the award.
Poe also takes up personal matters, such as White's poor health and
his own efforts to secure a special ink.
Poe requests that White reconsider the amount he was
paid for "Hans Phaal" and some literary notices.
