1) Hiram Haines, editor of the Democratic journal Constellation, was a friend of Edgar Allan Poe. According to Hervey Allen, Poe and his new wife Virginia spent their honeymoon at Haines' home in Petersburg, Virginia in May of 1836 (320).

2) Poe authored at least four of the works featured in the August 1836 issue of The Southern Literary Messenger, including "Israfel." The issue also contained writings by other important American authors of the day, such as "Stanzas" by William Gilmore Simms, "The Ruler's Faith" by Lydia Howard Huntley Sigourney, and "The Old Man's Carousel" by James Kirke Paulding.
