John Millner originally enlisted in the 38th Regiment, Company K (the "Cascade Rifles")in 1861. He was transferred to Company D on July 28, 1862 but was discharged on July 29, 1862 for having found a substitute, Michael Kelly (Gregory, 111). Michael Kelly deserted on August 1, 1862 (Gregory, 106).

There is a Willam J. Hines listed in the 57th Regiment Company F roster (Sublett, 64).

On June 18, 1862, the 38th Regiment was transferred to Armistead's Brigade, which included the 57th Regiment (Gregory, 20).

Pleasant A. Inman was enlisted in the 53rd regiment, Company E.

Nathaniel Bates of Company F was sent to Chimborazo Hospital in June 1862 with a shell wound to the head (Gregory, 80).

Mount Hermon Baptist Church was founded in 1844 and is located outside Danville in Pittsylvania County (http:// www.petersburg.com/c/c1.htm).

America M. Blair (1835-1873) was a cousin of the Bookers. She is also mentioned in James Booker's letter of September 30, 1862. "Mary" probably refers to Mary Ann Booker Sparks (1825-1872), John and James Booker's sister.

There are two blue five cent Confederate States stamps above the address. The cancellation over the postage stamps appears to read Richmond, Va.
