SCENE II.

Ximenes,
alone.
Some office to discharge for a great empire,
How sweetly does the task glide through the conscience,
When policy, and lenity conspire!
This happy union of the wise, and good,
But seldom meets the anxious minister!
Yet this fair union, in another object,
Engages, now, my mind, with warmer interest.
That object should I, happily, obtain,
'Twould gild the evening of my various day;
And my last scene would be, the placid hours,
Given by a vernal, and descending sun.
But Zaigri (Heaven accept my wish!) returns.
