It may not be amiss to take Notice, that, as the Subject of this Opera is not drawn from real History, so neither is it a new Fiction; but shadow'd out from a Novel in Cervantes's Don Quixote, (Book IV. of the First Part) call'd, The History of the Slave. The Readers will find that I have been obliged to alter some Circumstances in the Novel, in order to adapt them to the Conduct of a Drama. The Interlude, which is added in two Comick Scenes, is entirely new to our Climate: and the Success of it is submitted to Experiment, and the Taste of an Audience.
