THE EPILOGUE. Spoke by Mrs. GIFFARD.

How strange the Whim! Our Author bids me say
That Epilogues are Poison to a Play:
He bids me, while for your Applause I'm suing,
Scorn and condemn the very Thing I'm doing.
Our Epilogues, he says, serve but to shew
The Farce of Virtue, and the Joke of Woe;
And, if the Mortal shou'd affect your Breast,
The Epilogue will turn it to a Jest:
So in our Churches, when the learned Priest
His Flock has treated with a sacred Feast,
The Organ, which shou'd help to make devout,
Strikes up a Jig, and sends them dancing out.
