THE QUEST.

Man goes to battle against ancient kings,
More plainly still th' insistent war-cry rings
Across a strip of sea:
He goes to gather all the glorious things
Of victory.

O not for nought men suffer grief and pain!
Neither the soul of mankind makes in vain
Its eloquent appeal
If through this calvary a race may gain
Its shrined Ideal!
Man who found God in all the works of Time
Shall still seek on, and, rising out the grime
Of earth and war, turn then
And find Him in more wondrous ways sublime,
His ways with men.
