WARNING GIVEN BY THE SETTING SUN—1831.

The tranquil stillness of the evening hour
Brings to my mind the deeper hush of death;
To me, the breathing zephyrs have a power,
Which speaks of the last sigh of parting breath:
Even the bright sun, as slow he sinks away,
Thus writes with his red beam upon the lake:
“Many bright eyes which shone with me, to-day,
With me, to-morrow, shall no more awake!”
