TO CAPTAIN H. W. G. ROYAL ARTILLERY.

I

My dearest friend, altho' as true,
As truth itself can be,
A tinge of sadness doth imbue,
The love I feel for thee.

II

For I have felt the plentitude,
By which thine heart is sway'd:
My sole return is gratitude,
In emptiness array'd.

III

But Oh, my friend, if thou could'st see,
My heart's most inward core,
Thou then would'st feel sincerity,
Tow'rds thee in torrents pour.

IV

The charms of gold allure the eye,
And quickly disappear:
But friendship always draws a sigh,
For those who are most dear.

V

My friend, I've known thee since my birth,
And whilst below I stroll,
So well I know, and feel thy worth,
I'd trust thee with my soul!
