A SONG OF ABSENCE.
Einsam? Einsam? nein, das bin ich nicht!
Lonely? nay! I am not lonely!
When the Friends that once were nearest,
Distant now, but still the dearest
Greet me from afar!
When the Friends that once were nearest,
Distant now, but still the dearest
Greet me from afar!
Joyful? Nay! I am not joyful!
Witness many a secret yearning,
Wistful, tearful, still returning
Where my treasures are!
Witness many a secret yearning,
Wistful, tearful, still returning
Where my treasures are!
Mournful? Nay! I am not mournful!
When I feel that Memory holds me
To my dear ones, and enfolds me
As Love did of yore!
When I feel that Memory holds me
To my dear ones, and enfolds me
As Love did of yore!
Hopeful? Yes! My heart is hopeful!
When the thought once more to meet them—
Yet again, my loved ones! greet them—
Thrills it to its core!
When the thought once more to meet them—
Yet again, my loved ones! greet them—
Thrills it to its core!
