POETRY OF REAL LIFE.
My stream of song gushed, torrent-like and rude,From Heliconian heights, 'mid mist and cloud:
Haughty at first, as tho' its pride it bowed
To humbler things and lowlier neighbourhood—
But now, with greater depth and plenitude
Of waters, hushed it flows, and meek, not proud:
With voice more reaching far, tho' far less loud,
The still, deep voice of human brotherhood!
Nor does it scorn, with household stream, to flow
Thro' cities, or where e'er men toil for bread:
Nor e'en to turn a mill! in doing so
More useful far than thundering overhead;
And, oh! how far more godlike, bending low
To human wants, than causing idle dread!
