HERO.

Sad hero sat beside the tower
Where young Leander lay,
His hair bedabbled with the shower
Of ever-falling spray:
She beat her breast, and, passion-moved,
Cried to the cruel sea,
Since thou hast drowned my heart's beloved,
My weeping shall drown thee.
Farewell, sweet peace, fond love doth die
Upon this watery shore,
And here my languid corpse shall lie
To rise up nevermore:
For when thy grief-grown waves do leap
Their bounds, O cruel sea,
And not a tear is left to weep,
I'll drown myself in thee.
