BIRTH-DAY STANZAS.

TO ------ ON HIS ATTAINING HIS TWENTY-FIRST BIRTH-DAY.
Over all the greening valleys
Breathes the dewy balm of spring,
Over all the shadowy woodlands
Burst the notes of welcoming;
And a brighter light is streaming
Over all the world to-day,
For it is the gleesome spring-tide,
'Tis the merry month of May!
With a gladder note the skylark
Flutters up to meet the morn,
With a richer note the black-bird
Warbles from the tufted thorn,
With a softer voice the streamlet
Lisps its whispered love-song gay,
For it is the happy spring-tide,
'Tis the merry month of May!
And a dawn of gorgeous promise
Trembles over wood and wold,

Waiting for the regal Summer
And her pomp of green and gold;
Waiting for the full fruition
Of the blossoms of to-day,
Oh! it is the happy spring-time,
'Tis the merry month of May!
So, my friend, may your spring morning
Scatter fragrant promise round;
So, with trophy-wreaths and garlands,
May your after years be crown'd;
May a rich and sumptuous summer
Of good deeds begin to-day,
May the God of heaven be with you
In your merry, merry May!
