LIFE.

“Let thy heels spurn the earth; and thy raised ken
Fix on the line, which Heaven's eternal king
Whirls in the rolling spheres.”—
Dante.

I

Yes, life is but a feverish dream,
A drop snatch'd from the eternal stream—
An ignis-fatuus seen from far—
A drooping—trembling—falling star.

II

We wake too soon to sin and pain,
The drop rejoins the stream again;
Few are the lights our path to cheer—
Our star is shining o'er our bier.
