A VOLUNTEER SONG.

[_]

Tune—“ Ye Lingering Winds ,” &c.

What yells are those that load the gale,
When eastern breezes blow?
Why turns the cheek of Beauty pale
With terrour's sudden snow?
'Tis Gaul's fierce war-whoop rides the air:
‘For murder's stroke the neck prepare.’
For murder's stroke, pale Beauty! No:
See there thy hero stand,
Ardent to quell th' insulting foe,
And guard his native land.
Hark! hope's firm tones the breezes bear,
‘For fame's green wreath the brow prepare.’
At Valour's knee, in Albion's isle,
Freedom ne'er bends in vain:
He bids her mid the battle smile,
And snaps the threaten'd chain;
This, this (he cries) let cowards wear!
‘For conquest's crown the brave prepare.’
And shall the shuddering infant scream
Beneath a ruffian's knife?
Shall groans of death, and shrieks of shame,
Announce the sinking wife?
No: rend with patriot shouts the air;
‘For fame, for conquest we prepare!’
