LINES On the Death of the Infant Daughter of David Young, Dunoon.

O early snowdrop, pure and pale!
Could mother's love and tears avail,
The drooping bells would still have spread
Their snowy petals on the bed—
That bed of love the mother's breast—
The tender flow'ret's dearest rest.
Sweet baby snowdrop! short thy rest
On the fond mother's loving breast,
For ah! too soon, the icy grasp
Of death unloosed the tender clasp
That sheltered from the winter storm
The tiny flow'ret's fading form.
Pale babe! thy earthly robe of white
Is fallen now. In robes of light
Arrayed! a baby angel thou:
The Father's seal upon thy brow,
For near His throne He gives thee place,
And evermore behold His face.

The yearning love, the tender smile
That lit the parents' eyes, the while,
The little while, their flower was given,
To bud on earth, and bloom in heaven.
Sweet flower! the chilling blasts of time
Invade not that celestial clime,
Where, basking in the Father's smile,
Thou wait'st the dear ones left erewhile.
