Hymn.

[We walked in darkness, but at last]

[_]

Isaiah ix.

We walked in darkness, but at last
Are cheered by Heaven's eternal light;
The dreary shades of death are past,
And all beyond the tomb is bright.
A thousand joys are gathered round—
A thousand triumphs glad our way—
We hear and join in vict'ry's sound,
And glory brings its fairest day.
Fall'n is the intolerable yoke
Which long oppressed despairing man;
The oppressor's lawless rod is broke,
As in the day of Midian.
A child is born—a son is given
To us—whose rule shall never cease;
The Counsellor of the King of Heaven—
Father of Ages—Prince of Peace.
And peace and glory long shall dwell
With Him, who sits on David's throne;
The hope, the joy of Israel,
He reigns for ever, conqu'ring One!
