WRITTEN BENEATH A PICTURE.

1

Beneath this sketch of Mary's face,
How vainly does the muse essay
To add one gleam to Beauty's grace,
Or splendor to its heavenly ray!

2

'Twere vain to draw in brighter glow
The workings of the painter's art:
Suffice it, lovely Girl, to know—
Their charms enslav'd my doating heart!
