THE ROSE'S ADDRESS

On her Eighth Birthday.

Another year hath flitted by;
How quick the hours and minutes fly!
Another rose adorns my brow,
And I am changed, I know not how.
It is for you, my friends, to tell,
If I have used the minutes well,

31

And need not be ashamed to wear
The symbol of a new-born year.
I greet you all: may your good will
And gentle thoughts attend me still;
And I will study all my days,
How best I may deserve your praise.
