GOOD FRIDAY.

A COINCIDENCE.

When the Church-tower, at the “third watch” forlorn
With triple stroke had ushered in the day
On which the Saviour trod the Dolorous Way,
And meekly climbed for us the hill of scorn;
Lo! the shrill warning of the bird of morn
Startled the silence, as awake I lay,
And bade me think how in the twilight grey
Friends joined with foes to wreathe the crown of thorn.
And bird and belfry seemed to me to say,
‘Would'st thou in word or action never grieve
The Lord who died for thee, oh, “watch and pray;”
That if at midnight, cockcrow, morn, or eve,
The Master comes, robed in divine array,
His hand for thee a crown of joy may weave.’
