AT THE STAGE-DOOR

Down the passage where the gas
Vainly struggles with the wind
Straggling groups of women pass.
This one stamping chilly toes
Waits for one who lags behind.
That one takes an arm and goes.
Silhouettes of youth and age,
How denuded of the grace
Late so radiant on the stage!
Let them go! I wait for her:
Then I see the well-known face
Shining over marten-fur.
We take arms and march away,
Happy in our meeting here
After all the stupid day,
Free from work and free as light,
You and I together, dear,
In the happy chilly night!
