A STAR'S IMAGE.

A star's track in the clear water;
How many a myriad miles away,
The star a world is, vast and fair,
Gold with eternal day!
Farther than sight or sense can mark,
Farther than any bird can fly,
Or homeless winds that after dark
Sail with a lonely cry.
Yet the true water lifts its glass
Molten to silver, and behold,
Like a pale queen that none surpass
The far star sees its gold!
Lo then, my heart, a parable!
Beyond the glory of the star,
A lovelier face than words can tell
Looks on thee from afar.

Looks on thy face, and thinks to see
In its unruffled depths made plain,
The Face was marred for love of thee
With tears of blood and pain.
Yesterday thou hadst woe and stress,
Yesterday many storms did pass;
Now be thou still, and lift thy face
The one Star's looking-glass!
