THE WINTER SANCTUARY.

This dark and dreary winter eve,
When earth is bare and brown,
And homeless winds despairing grieve,
And the cold stars look down—
Come, look into the fire, my dear,
The ruddy glowing fire!
There's summer warmth and radiance here
When summer suns retire.
See what a fairy world of bloom,
Of living bloom and light,
Is prisoned in our little room
This dreary winter night!
A garden lit with golden flame,
A grove where sunset glow
Still lingers lovingly—the same
We watched so long ago!
It is the only radiance
The cheerless winter knows—
A little corner of romance
Within a world of prose.
And loving hearts and careful hands
Must tend the holy fire—
The sanctuary that waiting stands,
That wandering souls desire.
