THOREAU

In Walden, on a deathless page, he bends—
Not caring how the woodland minutes pass—
To weed his double crop of thought and food
While making earth say beans instead of grass.
Methinks a Spirit, beside the fallen hoe,
Still questions, questions, all the long-loved scenes;
Withdrawn so tensely that he cannot hear
Time making earth say bricks instead of beans.
