SCENE III

[Eve in her bed, with her hands crossed on her breast.]
EVE.

1

Now, at the closing of the day,
We, Virgin Mother, meekly pray
That Thou wilt clean and spotless keep
Our spirit, waking or asleep.

2

Let nothing in our hearts excite
Vain dreams or phantoms of the night.
Our yearnings purify that so
Our bodies slumber white as snow.

3

To God the Father, and the Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One,
Beginning, End, of all we be,
Thanksgiving, praise, eternally.
[She sleeps.]
