Occasion'd by Clemene's refusing a Request.

Her much fam'd Kindness have I try'd,
Have often ask'd, as often been deny'd,
What shall I call it, Prejudice or Pride?
No; She's all Goodness and she cannot err;
Necessity constrains when She's severe,
Or I am Guilty; there's no Fault in Her.
My Form or Humour has some great defect,
Some Imperfection that deserves neglect:
Then why should I Clemene's Love expect?

Breed answ'ring Fondness in the gen'rous Mind,
And still from Fav'rites we should Favours find.
