CONFIDENCE AND AFFECTION;

Lo! Love—the arch-enchanter—came,
And lighted at her feet
Aladdin's lamp, by whose pure flame
All fairy marvels meet!
A rosy glow is in the air,
A halo o'er the flowers,
And music melts in murmurs there,
And rapture wings the hours.

And all life else is dreary:

Nay! steal, to clasp her fairy zone,
The loveliest star above you,—
She only asks the smile—the tone,
That thrilling said—“I love you!”
Ah me! how soon the world will wake,
With cold and calm endeavor,
That dreamer from her trance,—and break
Love's magic lamp forever!
