I've seen a drop of morning dew
Like radiant gem serene,
Bright sparkling on a verdant bough
All clad in summer-green.
The risen sun exhal'd the tear,
And drank it, as it shone;

The sudden lightning smote the branch,
It shiver'd, and was gone.
Was not that dew-drop like the bloom
And morning of our span?
And yonder broken, blasted bough,
Like the frail hope of man?
