SONNET IV.—NIGHT.

On her car of deepest blue,
With silver thickly studded o'er,
Clad in robes of sombre hue,
Sprinkling round a dewy show'r;
A diamond cresent on her brow,
Shedding soft and chasten'd light,
Bidding cooling zephyrs blow,
Welcome, silent, tranquil Night.
Beneath thy covert while the many sleep,
The wretched may, unseen, uncensur'd, weep;
And forced all day with smiles to hide their woe,
Blest night! conceal'd by thee, the tears may flow,
The highest luxury the tortured heart can know.
