IN MEMORIAM.—GEORGE B. M'CLELLAN.

Another noble soul from us has gone
Beyond our storm and strife,
The strenuous battle done, the victory won,
Into a larger life.
Ours is the loss, the aching void, the pain
Who stay behind him here;
His is the best reward, the place, the gain,
Beyond this mortal sphere.
A grand, pure life he led! Nothing of mean
Or low he thought or did.
In his large nature, open and serene,
No envious thoughts he hid.
Duty his captain was, through life's stern fight
Its sole command he knew,
Nought for himself he craved, but all for Right,
A soldier brave and true.
Amid detraction, and cold praise, and blame,
Silent he held his way,
Secure that justice, slow howe'er it came
At last its word would say.
Rest then, brave soldier! rest in peace, dear friend,
This world's reward is nought;
Thou hast God's password! Faithful to the end
In word and act and thought.
