Meekly in Jordan's holy streamThe great Redeemer bowed;
Bright was the glory's sacred beam
That hushed the wondering crowd.
2
Thus God descended to approveThe deed that Christ had done;
Thus came the emblematic Dove,
And hovered o'er the Son.
3
So, blesséd Spirit, come to-dayTo our baptismal scene:
Let thoughts of earth be far away,
And every mind serene.
4
This day we give to holy joy;This day to heaven belongs:
Raised to new life, we will employ
In melody our tongues.
