IN THE POET'S CORNER

(WESTMINSTER)

Deep in the crowded Sepulchre of kings
What royal dust shall mingle with their own,
While the long centuries on noiseless wings
Each to its destined place fares on alone!
Kings die and are forgotten. Signet rings
Give the last mandate of the carven stone;
And where the mighty sat, a crumbling throne
Lies in the wrack of unremembered things.
To-day disproves the truth of yesterday;
Science denies whereof it once was sure;
Even altar fires have lost their wonted glow:
Yet golden Song still holds its deathless sway
Over the listening earth, and shall endure
Till all the stars in highest heaven burn low!
July and August, 1912.
