ON THE OLD FRONTIER LINE
THE SUMMIT OF THE ALLEGHANIES
What eager looks before, and sad behind!That wingéd Pioneer of pioneers,
Quick Hope, whose eyes reflect unrisen suns,
For those far-off alights and beckons on;
For these, the Angel with reverted face,
Memory, to whom the Past returns in tears,
Walks back through dusky gates of Long Ago.
