[Why should I cheat my heart with open lies]

Why should I cheat my heart with open lies,
Summoned by Fancy from her teeming store?—
Why call thee mine alone forevermore,
Yet know what distance parts, what fate defies
Our mutual love? True, we are joined by ties
That girdle earth, and bind fate's functions o'er
To sovereign love: but shall I not deplore
That I no longer look into thy eyes—
Bask in thy presence—fill my aching soul
With love's sweet calm?—Or all my senses thrill
With kisses gathered here and there at will,
As flowers in spring-time, till we touch the goal
Of more than mortal ecstasy, and roll
In joys that make the wondering gods stand still?
