XXIV.
DEVOTION.
Devotion's that where, reverently bending,The full heart holily itself outpours,
Forgetting all, save that which it adores,
Spirit and scene in one sweet union blending;
317
While holy words with fluent promptness slip,
With ready eloquence, from off the lip,—
Watching each form or thing that flitteth by.
I knew a deacon once, a holy man,
Who highest sat at church among the saints,
And freest judged by all of human taints,
Who 'gainst all follies laid perpetual ban,—
Forgetful quite of sermon, psalm and prayers,
Watching two younglings courting on the stairs.
