Child's American Hymn.

[_]

The following poem is scored for music in the source text.

1.

America, America,
Thou country of the free,
Beneath thy wing we stand to sing
A song of love to thee.
Our fathers from beyond the sea
Came to this western shore
For the dear boon of liberty,—
The dearest evermore.

2.

And think you that they left behind
Their darling little ones?
With careful thought they hither brought
Their daughters and their sons;
For men might wage the work of war,
And women toil at home,
But peace nor war will profit far
Where children may not come.

3.

And we will sing with tuneful hearts,
Like birdlings in a nest,
And ask that God's dear providence
Would keep us free and blest;
And we must learn to serve the land
That grants us noble birth,
That yields her space to ev'ry race,—
The dearest land on earth.
