Doors hast thou opened for us, thinker, seer!
Bars let down into pastures measureless;
The air we breathe to-day, through thee, is freer
Than, buoyant with its freshness, we can guess.

Thy forehead toward the unrisen morning set,
Nature and life faced with their own calm gaze,
No human thought inhospitably met,
Thou beckonest onward, as in earlier days:

Stirring the sluggish soul new paths to trace;
