THE EYE DROP.

What but a tear could sorrow tell,
Down stealing from the humid eye,
When like a crystal drop it fell,
To ache the heart that heaves the sigh.
It slept upon her speechless tongue,
But silence showed her feeling clear,
Till from her eyes the language sprung,
The tale of sorrow was a tear.
'Twas like a deep and swelling flood,
Which thro' a fissure breaks its way,
'Twas love which bursted with its load,
The grief of parting to betray.
The tongue may utter fare thee well,
And ev'ry sigh a friend endear,
But nothing has the power to tell,
The heart's affection like a tear.
When friendship takes its flight away,
No more forever to appear,
My tongue be still, but let me pay,
The last fond tribute of a tear.
Ah! thus our feelings is betray'd,
The sense of sorrow too severe,
It must the inmost powers pervade,
And nothing shows it like a tear.
