Dear heart, will e'er there come a time
When I shall turn to thee
For love responsive unto mine,
And coldness only see?
When vanished is the fond delight
That once shone in your eyes,

That day will be as darkest night,
No joy in it could rise.
If I should meet a chilling glance,
Where mine was wont to see,
Delight and joy in thy response,
Love, that were death to me.
As to the sturdy oak tree's cling,
The tender ivy vine,
O, may thy true affection be
A strong support to mine.
