33. The False Shaman as told by Sam Kenoi
They were on the war path.
They stopped for the night.
They were afraid.
nédaajiłdziná'a 'they were afraid'. 3a person distrib. imp. of né- ...[si- perf.]-l-dzi 'to be afraid' [act. intr.]. né- ?.
"Someone who may have power will perform a ceremony for us.
'Ákoo łi' jinndéí:
Then [to] one of the men:
1. biłkégóziͅ hálíń 'he who may have power'. bił 'with him'; kégóziͅ 'there is knowledge about it'; hálíń 'perhaps'.
2. nahánaałtło 'he will perform a ceremony for us' [see Ethnological note to the English translation of Chiricahua text 33, note 1]. nahá- 'for us' plus the 3rd person imp. of naa- |...[si- perf.]-l- tło 'to move one's arms about, to perform the ceremony for finding lost objects' [mediopas.].
3. daagoot'éí 'that which is'. daagoot'é is probably the theme -t'é 'to be' with the distrib. prefix and the prefix goo- ?.
This is the ceremony for locating the enemy. [See Ethnological note to Chiricahua text 34, note 1].
Then that man did not want to do it,
But they asked him again and again.
dá'iłké 'ághádaagołjindiná'a 'they asked him again and again'. Literally: 'they spoke thus to him just one [time] after another'.
Then:
'Ákoo:
1. 'i'óó'ání biyaayá [appears as 'i'óó'áͅní biyaayá in the text--MEC] 'to the westward'. 'i'óó'áͅ 'a round object has moved away'. biyaa 'under it'.
2. łíͅghééł 'saddle'. łí 'horse'; -ghééł, combining form of hééł 'burden'.
3. sisí k'aaí dábiłnnáńt'igo 'a belt filled all around with cartridges'. sis 'belt'; k'aa 'cartridges'; dá- 'just'; bił- 'with it'; nnáńt'i perf. of ni-ná-ni-...[ni- perf.]-t'é 'to put a string-like object around, in a circle' [act. intr.; ni- 'to a stop'; ná- 'around'; ni- completive].
The directions of the shaman cannot be questioned, no matter what taboos, restrictions, and requirements he may pronounce. To do so is to indicate lack of faith, which in itself is fatal to the success of the ceremony.
Then they did everything for him exactly in that way.
Nágo dá'ákaa díík'eh ká'ághádaajílaaná'a.

There was a moon.
One could see well right there.
The men with whom he went about did not like [that] man.

Then, now, he had begun to sing.

He prayed.
He knew nothing about it but he had moved his arms about.[3]
He ran outside.
He went over there where the horse had been tied up.
Then he jumped on the horse.
He rode away.
1. ch'éjinéńgoná'a 'he ran outside'. ch'é- 'out' plus the 3a form of the verb noted in linguistic note to Chiricahua text 24.8, §1.
2. k'izhiͅdashdiiłghoná'a 'he jumped on it'. k'izhiͅ 'to on' plus dashdiiłgho, 3a person perf. of dah-di-|...[ni- perf.]-l-ghee 'to move upward' [act. intr.].
3. gołnádiiłghoná'a 'he rode away'. Literally: '[the horse] ran with him [the man]'.
In this ceremony [See Ethnological note to Chiricahua text 34, note 1], the shaman moves his arms about.
Then those men sat around waiting for him.

A long time passed.
Then one of them went over there.
He looked about where the horse had been tied up.
He came back [to them].
