MARTIN MERRIVALE, HIS X MARK. By Paul Creyton. With fifteen full-page illustrations
and twenty-two initial letters, from designs by Billings. In one large volume, 12mo.
Price $1.50.

“It is a genuine, all-sided, heartsome book, with no sign of consciousness in all its exquisite humor,
beauty, and pathos. We have not seen a better delineation of New England rusticity than Paul Creyton's
`Cheesy,' and his `Step-mother.'”

New-York Courier and Inquirer.

Few writers have succeeded in interesting so wide a circle of readers as “Paul Creyton.” Although
his works were designed for mature minds, yet such is the purity and naturalness of his style, that young
people, and even children, are delighted with him. Few books published in America have had a greater
or more deserved popularity than the charming series above.

THE CITY SIDE; or, Passages from a Pastor's Portfolio. By Cara Belmont. 18mo.
Price, muslin, 50 cents; gilt, 75 cents.

ARCTIC ADVENTURES, BY SEA AND LAND. Illustrated with Maps and Engravings. By
Epes Sargent. 12mo., muslin. Price, $1.25.

The title given above shows its comprehensive scope, but the perusal of the book is necessary to appreciate
the masterly skill of Mr. Sargent in the arrangement of his materials. Aspiring to nothing more
than the modest designation of an “editor,” he is justly deserving of something of the credit conceded to
an historian, who consults numerous authorities, and selects, with unerring judgment, those which are
most reliable, and best adapted to his purpose. Within a volume of less than five hundred pages, he has
contrived to give us a fair conception of the whole progress of Arctic discovery, doing justice to the heroic
men who conducted the expeditions through lands and seas before unknown, indicating every step of adventure
and exploration, and enlivening the story with the quotation of thrilling exploits, and descriptions
of magnificent scenery, which carry the reader along with the narrator, and steadily increase the interest
he feels in every thing respecting portions of the world he may be able to visit.
