TO
HUMAN HEARTS AND CHRISTIAN SOULS.

The author dedicates these pages; not the product of
fancy, but based upon facts of real life. He desires that
they shall be perused by the virtuous and thoughtful,
and trusts that, as chronicles of the poor, they will interest
the sympathies of the opulent. That they may have some
little influence in directing attention to the terrible evils
that exist in our communities—the sad social anomalies that
startle the political economist, and grieve the philanthropist
—is the earnest prayer of one who has gone down into the
moral wilderness of our over-crowded population, and witnessed
the struggle of Good against Evil. With the legislator,
the capitalist, and the friend of our fellow-creatures, he will
thereafter leave the “Tenant House.
