PREFACE.

The following tales, though relating to matters of a domestic
and local character, are yet founded more strictly on facts, than
any of the author's composition. All of them, indeed, are but
illustrations of the actual incidents by which they were suggested,
with little other variation than what would naturally arise
from the introduction of scenery and dialogue in bringing about
the results, and, perhaps we should add, from the exercise of the
license generally conceded to the writers of such stories—that
of making any alteration in the grouping, which will heighten
the interest, of the narrative, or add to the effect of the development
of the plot.
