ADJOURNED MEETING, August 15th 1866

Present B. Johnson Barbour, Rector, Samuel Watts,
Thomas J. Pretlow, Marmaduke Johnson, Thomas L. Preston,
John R. Woods, Samuel H. Lewis, and R. W. Hughes.

The Rector laid before the Board an invitation to attend
the Inauguration of the Statue of Washington, at the Virginia
Military Institute, Lexington, Va., September 10th 1866
Whereupon, on motion

Resolved that the Secretary be instructed to tender the
thanks of the Board to the authorities of the Virginia Military
Institute for their invitation, and to assure them that such
members of the Board as may have it in their power to do so,
will attend the Inauguration.

The Rector laid before the Board a letter from Professor
Charles S. Venable stating that closer & more accurate estimates
had been made of the cost of the repairs to the House
occupied by him on Monroe Hill. These estimates exceed those
made by Mr. Connell by several hundred dollars, being about
$2500. Whereupon, on motion

Resolved that the sum of $1250 be appropriated to the
repairs of the house known as the Monroe house now occupied

by Professor Venable with the condition that the said Venable
apply the further sum of $1250 for the same purpose, and that
the said sum of $1250 so applied by the said Venable be retunned
to him out of the funds of the University when the
finances of the Institution will render it practicable.

Resolved further that a committee of three consisting of
Prof. Venable, Th. L. Preston & Prof. Maupin be appointed
to superintend the repairs to be made upon the said Monroe
House.

After some time spent in reading the testimonials of
Applicants for the Vacant Professorships the Board adjourned
to meet tomorrow morning at 9 oclock.

The Board met pursuant to adjournment. Present the same
members as on yesterday.

The privy near Professor Venable's house being represented
to the Board as a nuisance

Resolved that the Proctor be instructed to have it removed
to some other more suitable place.

The Rector laid before the Board reports from the Professors
in the Schools of Natural Philosophy, Chemistry,
Physiology & Surgery and Anatomy & Materia Medica of the
additions, which are necessary to be made to the Apparatus,
plates &c for illustration in their respective Schools,

made in pursuance of a resolution of the Board passed at
its last meeting. Whereupon on motion

Resolved that $570 be appropriated for the purchase of
Apparatus for the School of Natural Philosophy.

Resolved that $600 be appropriated for the purchase of
apparatus and chemicals for the school of Chemistry.

Resolved that the sum of $500 per annum be appropriated
as a compensation to Henry Scharf for his services in the
execution of Colored plates for the illustration of the lectures
in the Schools of Physiology & Surgery and Anatomy &
Materia Medica, and also that the further sum of $200 be
appropriated to purchase materials for the same.

The Rector laid before the Board the following communication

Dear Sir

I beg leave respectfully to ask the Board of
Visitors to found the following prize.

Viz, a gold medal with appropriate devices, of
the value of $40 to be delivered by the Rector at the annual
commencement to that student of the senior & intermediate
classes in the School of Mathematics who during the preceeding
Session has solved in the most approved manner the greatest
number of written exercises proposed by the Professor to
those classes in the course and at the different examinations
held in the school. The award to be made by the Committee on

examinations in the School of Mathematics.

"To secure the foundation I bind myself my heirs and
assigns to pay to the Board of Visitors of the University of
Virginia an annuity of forty dollars in gold for four years,
the payments to be made on the 1st day of May 1867, 1868,
1869, 1870 respectively."

P.S. Should the Board establish the prize, I hope to be
able to make it permanent before the expiration of the four
years.

Resolved that Professor Venable's proposition to establish
a medal temporarily (Viz, for four years) in the School of
Mathematics at his own expense is sanctioned, and the Secretary
is hereby instructed to enter his communication upon
the minutes under the above modification & restriction -
and to deliver the original to the Proctor for safe keeping.

Resolved, that the subject of a supply of water and of
Reservoirs be referred to the Executive Committee to report
in full at the next meeting of the Board.

Resolved, that the subject of a fourth Hotel be referred
to the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Faculty with
instructions to report at the adjourned meeting in September.

On motion

Resolved that the petition of Charles E. Bailey to reopen

the Baths, as formerly conducted by M. D'Alfonce, and also to
establish a Laundry, be referred to the Executive Committee.

Resolved, that the Proctor be instructed to pay Professor
S. Maupin such compensation for the use of his horses and
wagon as in his opinion may be just and proper.

Resolved that Stephen O. Southall be appointed Professor
of Constitutional & International Law, Equity and Law-Merchant.

Resolved, unanimously that John E. Johnson be appointed
Proctor Superintendent of Grounds & Buildings.

Resolved, that Henry Massie be appointed Hotel Keeper
and that Hotel A. be assigned to him.

Resolved that when this Board adjourns, it will adjourn
to meet on the 8th day of September at 5 oclock P.M. for the
purpose of electing a Professor of Latin, and for such other
business as may be brought before it.

On motion the Board then adjourned.
